DIY Red Highlights!

Should I be ashamed that I really enjoy watching The Vampire Diaries on the CW? I really like it. A lot. As I was thinking about what to next with my hair, it hit me.

For those of you who watch TVD, you probably remember when Elena gets streaks in her hair. I thought it looked really cute, and decided to try to do something similar myself!

Here's the highlighting kit I used! I was really exciting about using a kit where the bleaching and coloring were done together, and not as separate processes. I love love LOVE how it turned out :)

Here's what came in the kit:

And here is how I did it!

DIY Project

Hey ya'll! So I got this adorable little vanity for just $30 from a friend. Though it needs a little refinishing, it's in pretty amazing shape. This is where I do my makeup each day.

My problem was that, since I wear powder foundation, a lot of it was ending up on the vanity and making it look dirty. Thankfully, I thought of a brilliant idea! Here's the project!!

What you'll need:

One cloth or plastic place mat (I got mine from Target for like $2 or $3

Scissors

A writing implement

A ruler

Step one:

Measure your place mat against your desk/vanity/table and measure how big it needs to be. Mine actually hung over the edge of the vanity, so I knew exactly where to draw the line.

Step two:

Cut your place mat to the proper size.

Step 3:

Put your place mat on your desk/vanity/table, and BAM! Your lovely piece of furniture is now protected. If you have used a cloth place mat, you'll be able to just throw it in the was when it gets dirty. If you used a plastic one (like I did), then you can just rinse or wipe it off easily.

Oatmeal Mask

Well, it's certainly been a while since I've posted. With the holidays here, I have a little extra time on my hands so I thought I'd blog about a face mask I'm trying.

Sometimes when my skin isn't cooperating, I rub some olive oil into it (for about 5min) and then steam it for a few minutes (8-10). Today my skin is being especially frustrating, so I'm trying something new I found online here: http://www.urbanskincare.com/blog/beauty-recipe-at-home-oatmeal-mask/

It's an oatmeal mask! I have no idea if it's going to work, but apparently oatmeal is good for your skin, so I thought I'd give it a try. All I did was mix some oatmeal and water in a bowl and applied it to my face as best as I can. I'll probably leave it on for the next half hour or so.

It's just something nice you can do for your skin, or even with friends on a "girl's night". I'll have to let ya'll know how it works out!

Hearty Black Bean Quesadillas

My mom and sister, Sarah recently discovered an INCREDIBLE recipe blog called Budget Bytes. This is the first recipe that I tried and I fell it love with it! These quesadillas are vegetarian, really easy to make, cheap, delicious, and VERY filling! We served them with sour cream, salsa, and tortilla chips on the side.

Here are two pictures (one of the quesadilla filling and the other of the finished product). Scroll down for the recipe link.

French Toast

Happy Friday the 13th!

As promised, here is a simply how-to on french toast. Don't worry, it's a very simple recipe and yummy too! It's something you can whip up in minutes and eat alone or with bacon, sausage, eggs, potatoes, or anything else on the side!

You will need:
A frying pan
A stove
A little butter (just for the pan)
A bowl big enough to fit a slice of bread
A fork
A pancake turner
3 slices of bread (white or wheat, whichever you prefer)
1 egg
1/4 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (I REALLY like cinnamon, but you don't have to use as much as I did.)
Powdered sugar (optional)

Step 1: Crack egg into bowl. Add milk, cinnamon, and vanilla.

Step 2: Beat this with a fork for about 30 seconds.

Step 3: Turn burner to medium heat and put a very small amount of butter in pan (you may need to do this now and again between cooking pieces of french toast.) Wait until butter bubbles a little like this:

Step 4: Quickly dunk a slice of bread in mixture. Coat both sides. Put in pan.

At this point, it may be hard to gauge how long it's going to take for it to cook. My suggestion: lift a corner with pancake turner now and again to check it.

Step 5: Flip it over when it looks golden brown, like this:

Step 6: Sprinkle some powdered sugar on top, and ENJOY! :)
